. The Eye landed at the Mississisppi-Louisiana line
. The Eye was more than 30 miles wide
. The devastation covered the entire Mississippi
Coast
. The storm surge was 30 feet and traveled inland
as far as 12 miles
. 235 Mississippians died
. 68,729 homes were destroyed
. 65,237 homes had major damage
. 100,318 homes had minor damage
. 16 Mississippi public schools were totally destroyed
. 24 public schools were severely damaged
. 262 other public schools were damaged
. The debris left behind was more than 188 million
cubic yards
. Hurricane Andrew created 20 million cubic yards
of debris
. Katrina's debris, if stacked onto a football field,
would reach over 10 1/2 miles
